As an English major,
it's impossible not to fall in love with literature.
Book, novels, short stories, plays, and poems will eventually get appreciated, one way or another. These are things others would find boring, dull and nonsense. Well, they're entitled to their own opinion. If you ask me, of course, I'd say the opposite. It's not that I'm biased (a bit though..), but I'm just saying that if you give literature a chance, you'd find yourself agreeing with me on that matter. But hey! I'm not here to convince you or what, that's not my point in this post. So.. let's get to the real deal.

I'm about to share to
you dear readers, a poem that's close to my heart. It's really, really old but
its message is trendy still. Very trendy, I'd say. Love. Much has
been said about this theme. Much has been done in its name. To say the least,
it's a very cliché topic. Hmm... Yet, this poem encapsulates the essence of true love
and how should it be. That's what I love about it. Many lessons could be extracted
out of it as well. I personally think that this is, and remains, the best love
poem there is. (This may even be an understatement.)What more is that it is
written by the famous/ well- known/ brilliant Literary Icon-- Mr. William
Shakespeare himself. (Duh? For real?)
This is taking long so I won't write much more. Here is the poem: (This may be
very familiar to you, dear, if you have/ had Literature classes.)
Sonnet 116
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
(Written in Old English, but still comprehensible.)
The sonnet holds the true meaning
of love! As it says, true love is endless. It defies Time’s
powerful nature because it lasts forever. It actually has an
appealing beginning, since it wakes the readers up from their own concept of
what love is. From there, the Poet proceeds to inform them of what is true love
like, and how does it work. To add, the sonnet is all about love in its most ideal
and somewhat perfect form. It suggests that love does not change at all
amidst the flaws seen in the partner, or the old age, or even when
there are mountains of trials and difficulties that might come along the way. True
love is steady and even serves as a guide that leads lost souls so to find
comfort and peace. This idea of love is quite contradictory to what
others believe nowadays. Many are blinded of the physical and moral
aspects of a person. Most often than not, the same people conclude love to
happen at a first sight; which is a total opposite of what the Poet thinks as
per established in this sonnet. Love is not bounded by mere look or
touch; it is a commitment of two intelligent individuals who share the same
passion. It is by nature unending and outlives time itself.
This, therefore, must be
the standard of love that everyone should adapt. It is the kind
that endures forever and remains constant throughout the passing of time. Although
it might seem impossible for some, but always remember that love is not at the
mercy of time’s cruel hands. It exists with a different dimension and space, as
emphasized earlier. So, true love is as real as this
sonnet is.
I love you. Always. |
Today, our forever begins... |
I love how the poem above agrees
with my favorite love quotation from the Bible:
"LOVE is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out. If you love someone, you will be loyal to him/ her no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him/ her, always expect the best of him/ her, and always stand your ground in defending him/ her. All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an END, but LOVE goes on FOREVER."
There! I’ve shared
my thoughts about love. How about you? It’s now your turn to do the same.
Please let me know what you think by dropping a comment below. I’m excited to
hear something from you soon, dear! J
